In May, 2025, Colorado enacted a new law that dictates wind drivers must stop for school buses in a new way. It's enforced if a school bus is stopped with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. All vehicles must stop including those in oncoming lanes unless separated by a physical median. Previously, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction could proceed if they were separated from the bus by a painted median. The new law specifies that the median must be physically raised or depressed to qualify as a separate roadway. Colorado also passed a house bill, allowing automated vehicle identification systems to record violations. In partnership with law enforcement, school buses may install mounted traffic cameras that detect and document when a vehicle passes the bus illegally, violators could be fined up to $300.
