The Durango Soccer Shootout will bring a major boost to local commerce. La Plata County Commissioner Martha Porter-Norton will deliver a keynote address on the mental health crisis and Manna Soup Kitchen will hold its annual plant sale on Mother's Day weekend. More than 9,000 soccer players, their families, coaches, and officials are expected to arrive in Durango the weekend of May 9th through the 11th for the 30th annual Common Spirit Durango Shootout Soccer Tournament. Tournament Director Kathy Wilson said more than 160 teams from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah are registered for this year's shootout. The influx of visitors provides a significant economic boost to kick off Durango summer tourism season. According to an economic impact study from the Fort Lewis College Katz School of Business, the tournament contributes more than $2.5 million to the Durango economy, including $125,000 in sales tax and $85,000 in lodgers tax revenues. If you are a youth soccer fan, you can catch games at Escalante Middle School, Riverview Elementary School, the Skyhawk and Duane Smith soccer fields at Fort Lewis College, and the La Plata County fairgrounds. La Plata County Commissioner Martha Porter-Norton will deliver a keynote address on Thursday, May 15th titled, "Mental Health in Crisis: "A Community Conversation on Compassion, Action, and Hope." She will share regional data, personal experiences, and insights from her public leadership and behavioral health advocacy work. Porter-Norton's address will highlight the power of reducing the stigma for those who suffer from mental health issues and will offer opportunities for attendees to engage, support, and take action. The event will take place at the Fort Lewis College Center for Innovation, located on the second floor of the main mall on Main Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 and the keynote starts at 6:00 PM.
