One of Durango's biggest challenges has been the lack of affordable housing in the area. As a result, workers can't find a place to live and employers can't keep employees. On Saturday, April 29th, the Regional Housing Alliance hopes to find solutions during the second Annual Southwest Housing Summit on April 29th at the DoubleTree Hotel. You're watching the "Local News Network," brought to you by FLC Center for Innovation and Durango Gelato Coffee and Tea. I'm Sadie Smith. This summit brings together policymakers, housing professionals, developers, and local industry residents to discuss attainable and affordable housing solutions.

We really want to dive deeper into the discussions around solutions for affordable and attainable housing, public-private partnerships, best practices, lessons learned, and also how to collaborate as a regional approach to addressing our housing challenges for our local communities.

National author, Nolan Gray, will attend as a keynote speaker. His book, "Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It," argues why zoning abolition is a necessary condition for building more affordable, equitable, and sustainable cities.

He is going to be talking about his approaches to YIMBYism and community buy-in, and also progressive approaches with zoning reform efforts to reduce those barriers to help diversify your housing projects and your local landscape.

YIMBY is an acronym for Yes, In My Backyard, a pro-housing movement that supports increased housing development as a way to address housing affordability and availability.

We're trying to address a lot of these things through innovative pathways, creative approaches, innovative ideas around financing structures. Also just lessons learned through grants and funding sources at the local and state level to help address these needs at a funding source.

The Regional Housing Alliance supports and develops affordable, attainable housing for the essential workforce that keeps La Plata County running. Its goal is to ensure long-term economic stability and community resilience. The Southwest Housing Summit brings together key stakeholders to tackle housing challenges and explore solutions for residents across the county.

You know, we all want to shape our housing future together in a collaborative way, and I hope that this event showcases that for our local community to build trust in the efforts that we're doing.
