Learn how to prepare for evacuations in case of emergency. Fort Lewis College asks alumni to look in their closets for old memorabilia and World Atlas named A Four Corners Town, one of the most overlooked destinations in Colorado. I'm Sadie Smith with Fires Blazing in La Plata County Emergency Management Coordinator for La Plata County's Office of Emergency Management. Rob Farino urges community members to stay informed and be prepared. Community members can sign up for emergency alerts on Code Red through the link on ready la plata.org. The website includes an updated map of fires and evacuation areas. Farino also asks community members to make sure their phones are enabled to receive emergency alert texts. By going to their phone settings, he encourages homeowners to make a plan in case of evacuation, have a go bag ready and practice fire drills.

We teach people pet bills, papers, and personal items, so if there's personal items like glasses, contacts, all those little things you need, those should all be in a GO Kit. So making your Go kit, having it near the door, maybe in your closet by the front door or somewhere that's easy to grab. Those kind of things that will get you by for three to five days if you have to go to a shelter or a hotel room, those things that you're going to need to make it through.

Farino reminds residents to have copies of their important documents in a post evacuation destination if they need to leave. The La Plata County Office of Emergency Management works with the Humane Society to ensure that owners can bring their small animals to the emergency shelters. If you have old Fort Lewis College memorabilia, you may be able to donate it to the college. To catalog the school's history, the school specifically asks for classic sweatshirts, photos from the 1983 graduation event programs and homecoming buttons for donation information.
