Community Gets First Look at Future Three Springs Elementary School

November 21, 2025

Families, educators, and community members gathered on Nov. 6 to get a first look at the designs for Durango’s future Three Springs Elementary School. The event showcased renderings, design boards, and interactive displays highlighting how the new school will blend innovation with nature — creating flexible, future-ready spaces that connect students to the outdoors. Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser shared that the design “represents where education is headed — and what’s possible when innovation meets nature.” The event built excitement and transparency around the district’s Investing in Our Schools Bond progress, as the community moves closer to breaking ground in 2026. The three Spring school is going to be amazing. Going to serve this great community, growing community in Durango. I think there's a lot of energy behind it.

This is a new elementary school, so we'll go pre-K through fifth grade. The total number we're building for right now is just over 500, but we are building the infrastructure and utility for a future expansion should that need arise.

We're pretty excited about some of the spaces that we're creating in, in inside the building. Instead of having a traditional library, this school will have a learning commons, and so it's part of the circulation in the school. So students will be moving through this space. It'll be activated with different learning zones, including a makerspace and really good connection to the technology aspects of, of the, of the school as well. I think what's unique about the Three Springs Elementary is its integration into nature. So we've created learning porches outside of every classroom in the building. So you could think about the, the back porch of your, of your house and how it connects back to to nature. It's really, it's a space that extends the learning environment outside and allows to make that the ability to make that connection.

We've been working with the Three Springs Elementary Design advisory group, as well as elementary students at Farida Mesa to get input on playground equipment and what we want that space to look like. And we're themeing the playgrounds to kind of be inspired by the geography around here. So there's different terraces of play, and our upper terrace is mountain themed, and then the lower terrace is desert themed,

And it'll really integrate into three Springs well, because Three Springs has such a focus on nature with all the walking paths and ponds and natural materials like the sandstone seats.

I mean, really our focus is to celebrate Durango. It's such an incredible and unique place, and part of that is the people that are here and kids and inspiring bright futures. And part of that is the nature that we get to interact with every single day. So we're hoping to bring that through every scale of our designs.

So we anticipate breaking ground in the summer of 2026, and then we'll wrap construction in the spring of 28 for an opening that fall. So it'll be really late spring toward the end of the 27 28 school year. And then we'll open for the fall of 28.
