Come join the celebration downtown for the General Palmer Hotel's 125th birthday on May 20th, the City of Durango received an award for financial excellence for 2023 budget, and the Southwest Rural Philanthropy Days returns in July, for the first time in four years. Come join the fun on the 500 block of Main Avenue on May 20th from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM for a party complete with live music, tours of the hotel, and family-friendly fun. The city of Durango received the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2023 budget. The award is given to governments that demonstrate excellence in budget presentation, and is the highest honor given to governments that meet the highest standards of budget presentation. An independent panel evaluated the city of Durango's budget which had to meet certain criteria such as demonstrating a clear understanding of the budget process, preparing a budget that is accurate, clear, and understandable and communicating the budget to the public in a clear and concise manner. The city's transparency portal, OpenGov is a key factor in assisting with the visibility of the budget by the public. The Rural Philanthropy Days conference aims to strengthen local nonprofits and the communities they serve. It will kick off at Fort Lewis College on Wednesday, June 7th before moving to the La Plata County Fairgrounds on June 8th. The third day will take grant makers on a tour of Silverton, while local nonprofit staff have the option of registering for a well-being in the workplace retreat held at Animas High School. This rotating education and networking event happens every four years in the southwest Colorado region including Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan Counties, and the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Tribe. Events include a Southwest Regional Town Hall, a keynote panel on philanthropy and skill building training sessions among others. Organizers anticipate more than 70 funders and grant makers to attend the conference. Tickets will be available as long as they last or May 24th.
