The four Coroner's Motorcycle Rally is back this Labor Day weekend. The Sun Dog Gallery honors the late Stanton Englehart and the Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics stepped down from his role in Durango to accept a new position. The four Coroner's Motorcycle rally returns to the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Thursday through Sunday, August 28th through 31st. This year marks the Motorcycle Rallies 32nd anniversary. The weekend includes live music, stunt shows, demonstrations, artisan vendors, exhibits, rodeo events, and races for tickets and daily schedules. Visit the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally website. Sun Dog Gallery in Mancuss will showcase five decades of art by Stanton Englehart to honor his impact on the local art scene. Englehardt grew up in Cortez and taught art at Fort Lewis College until retiring in 1991. Englehardt died in 2009. This retrospective exhibit will include landscapes inspired by the southwest, intimate compositions, and rare works being shown publicly for the first time. The opening night reception will be on Friday, September 5th from four to 7:00 PM Eng Hart's Art will be on display through Tuesday, September 30th. For updates in other artists events, follow the Sun Dog Gallery Instagram page. Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics, Travis Whipple, will leave his position at the end of August. After three years with the college, Whipple has accepted a role as Vice President of Athletics at Southwest Minnesota State University. During his time at FLC student athletes had a department wide GPA of 3.25. The department also received record support from donors and increased community partnerships. Whipple says he is grateful for his time and experience at FLC and is optimistic about the future of FLC Athletics. Associate Athletic Director for external relations. Colorado Gives Day Kick-Off Month

Durango Transit has seen yet another record-setting year, and is on track to exceed the all-time record number of rides set in 2023. However, without new grants or other sources of funding, the local transportation organization will go into the negative in 2026, and will need to start cutting back services. The Multimodal Advisory Board has come up with possible solutions, and will continue to do so to keep the Durango Transit running. While school is solidly back in session, that doesn’t mean kids are out of options for activities! Durango Parks and Recreation have recently doubled scholarship allotments for qualifying youths 17 years and younger - scholarships can be used for Parks and Recreation activities or for facility passes. Road Closures and Delays as Intersection Improvements are Underway

Colorado Department of Transportation and Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are continuing work on the US Highway 550, Main Street, and 14th Street intersection. As of Oct. 27, the intersection will be closed for about 11 days while D&SNGRR replaces the railroad tracks as part of overall safety improvements to the intersection, so be prepared to take alternative routes during the closure. An open call to artists in the Four Corners from the Durango-La Plata County Airport went out last week for three installations in the new baggage claim area. The selection committee will be looking for artwork featuring the Four Corners region's cultural, geographical, and historical diversity. Proposals are due by 3:00 p.m. Dec. 17. The City of Durango will begin construction on a new trail at Twin Buttes to create more accessible routes to two trails. The new trail will expand the terrain available for Class 1 E-Bikes and provide an alternative to the current challenging route connecting the Cliffrock Loop and Upper Twin Buttes Trail. Miller Middle School Grand Opening Postponed

The Oct. 25 grand opening of the newly finished Miller Middle School building has been indefinitely postponed following the death of a Durango School District 9-R student on Oct. 24. Considering the circumstances, Durango School District 9-R felt the celebratory nature of the grand opening was not appropriate, and will set a new time for the opening event at a later date. Leaves, Halloween, and Grand Openings

Highway 160 Improvements Finally Funded

The seven-mile stretch of Highway 160 east of Elmore’s Corner has been the focus of local officials for nearly ten years. Now, thanks to funding from the bi-partisan Federal Infrastructure Bill, improvements will begin in 2027. A Colorado Department of Transportation study found that, over a four-year period, there was one deadly accident and four serious ones on this particular stretch of road. Cidery Calls on Local Apple Donations

Fenceline Cider’s Community Pick Program returns after a successful 2023 harvest season, in which it gathered more than forty thousand pounds of apples from the local community. The initiative invites area residents with apple trees to donate their harvests to be used as part of the company's ciders. Fenceline says it helps reduce the amount of local fruit that might go unused after ripening. Legends on the Animas 

Professional boxing is making its return to Durango with the Legends on the Animas event on Saturday, Oct. 18. Many of us recognize the mural of heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey on the side of El Rancho Tavern, where he fought back in 1915. Local Teacher Honored

The theater community is celebrating Nicholaus Sandner as Colorado’s top drama teacher. Sandner is a Durango local, a Fort Lewis College graduate and a drama teacher at Montezuma Cortez High School.
