The La Plata County Humane Society expects a deluge of just born puppies and kittens this spring. So, it's throwing a giant baby shower in May. You're watching the local news network brought to you by the Carver Brewing Company and Durango Party Rental. I'm Wendy Graham Settle. When a baby's on its way, the expectant momma's friends usually throw a baby shower to supply her with baby clothes, diapers, and other supplies to celebrate the new arrival. But what happens when you expect it to rain more than 500 puppies and kittens during the next few months? You ask the community to throw a baby shower for all your babies. The La Plata County Humane Society already has started to receive litters of tiny kittens and puppies that aren't quite old enough for adoption, and all those babies need food, toys, blankets, and other supplies to grow up healthy, strong, and ready for their forever families.

So this is our third year with our baby shower and we've noticed it's kind of becoming very popular around other shelters and so we wanted to implement it with our shelter, and it's a wonderful event that we really enjoy 'cause it's a way for our community to support us by donating some of the necessary lifesaving goods that also that help our foster families out with all the puppies and kittens we're expecting.

The shelter doesn't have the room, nor the manpower, to care for all the babies that arrive. So, it relies on volunteers to foster young puppies and kittens until they're old enough for adoption.

Mandie Frazier and her family have been fostering puppies and kittens for years.

We've had mamas, we've had orphans who need bottle feeding, we've had a lot like these guys who come to us, you know, eating on their own, but a little wild and just needing someone to be patient and teach them that humans aren't scary and humans have yummy food, and just get them trusting people so they can be socialized and adoptable.

Frazier says the supplies they receive through the shelter's annual baby shower allows them to concentrate on caring for and loving their temporary pets.

To foster babies, it takes a lot of food and toys and some medicine and just, you know, the litter and all of the things that these babies need so that as fosters, we can just concentrate on providing the love and the care and the safety, and not be worried about having all the supplies we need.

The puppy and kitten baby shower runs from May 1st through May 8th. Buy supplies through local pet stores or make a donation through the La Plata County Humane Society website at lpchumanesociety.org.
